Department of Chemical Engineering Technology was established in 2012. At present, this department offers a program namely Bachelor of Chemical Engineering Technology (Biotechnology), which has been acreditated by Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) for SIX years. Our primary mission is to produce professionals in chemical enginering technology and biotechnology. The department has been relocated to UTHM Pagoh Campus, which provides a convenient learning and teaching environment to students with excellent facilities. With 10 academic and 3 supporting staff members, department members strive on continual improvement in 'laboratory facilities' and 'teaching and learning', as well as extensive research in chemical engineering technology and biotechnology.
 
In achieving an excellence of bachelor program, our curiculum structure and hands-on activities relies on the following Programme Educational Objectives (PEOs):

PROGRAMME DESCRIPTION

BNN 

Bachelor of Chemical Engineering (Biotechnology) with Honours aims to produce graduates who are competent, mature, and exposed with knowledge and technical skills based on the latest technology to meet the demand of current market. This degree programme is for students who are interested in the technology application of chemical engineering especially in the area of biotechnology.Bachelor of Chemical Engineering (Biotechnology) with Honours aims to produce graduates who are competent, mature, and exposed with knowledge and technical skills based on the latest technology to meet the demand of current market. Learning system of this bachelor programme is emphasized on the ‘hands-on’ and practical component to ensure graduates are knowledgeable in theory and highly skilled in the chemical engineering technology applications.

All 12 laboratories for JTKK are located at Block H, UTHM (Pagoh Campus). All JTKK laboratories are equiped with instruments/apparatus with necessary facilities e.g. water, compressed gas, nitrogen gas, cold-room storage, etc., which provide practical and research experiences to all undergraduated and postgraduated students. INTERNAL AUDIT OSHE UTHM 

-The Department of Chemical Engineering Technology, UTHM Pagoh campus were audited by OSHE UTHM on 11th April 2019. The purpose of audit was to verify the level of UTHM Pagoh laboratory safety regulations. To conclude, the auditing process went smoothly.

 MTKK LAB INSPECTION BY "JABATAN AUDIT NEGARA"

- On 11th and 12th March 2019, Department of Chemical Engineering Technology (JTTK) laboratory were audited by National Audit Department of Malaysia to verify the equipment status based on the concession agreement. We feel gratefully that the audit process go smoothly.

INTERVIEW ASSESSMENT ON SAFETY AND

CHEMICAL HANDLING FOR PSM II STUDENTS

- On 6th March 2018, an interview assessment (IA) was conducted by laboratory team consisting of 4 PSM II students, lab team members (Pn. Masayu and En. Redzuan) and Dr. Akhma for a safety briefing and chemical handling procedure as a pre-requisite before performing lab works. The interviews had been conducted successfully and the main purpose of IA is to enhance safety awareness among students and preventing laboratory accident that might occur during conducting an experiment.

Congratulation to the students and lab team members for conducting IA. The IA is part of important procedure that need to be followed by PSM students in future before granting permission to perform lab works in JTKK laboratories.

LPU Visit from Nasuha Herbs Team

- On 25th October 2018, a delegation from Nasuha Herbs Pagoh led by En Haris (Director of Nasuha Herbs) paid a visit to JTKK Laboratories located at Blok H. This visit had been assisted by laboratory representatives (En. Redzuan, Pn. Masayu and Pn. Aziah) and JTKK lecturers (led by Head of Department of Chemical Engineering Technology - Dr. Akhma). The purpose of the visit is to observe the facilities and equipments owned by JTKK, beside to enhance research collaboration between Nasuha Herbs and JTKK. 

We look forward for more visit and collaboration from Nasuha Herbs.

LPU Visit to JTKK Laboratories

On 20th September 2018, the University’s Board of Director (LPU) visited the Department of Chemical Engineering Technology (JTTK) laboratory. The participants during the visit is the Vice Chancelor and other staff from the Board of Directors. The purpose of the visit was to observe and evaluate the condition of the department’s laboratories. The outcome of the visit was to act on non-satisfying laboratory’s condition by implementing corrective actions.

PUBLICATION

In JTKK, significant findings and substantial impacts from research, mainly in chemical engineering technology and biotechnology, are published in journals, conference papers, book chapter, research book, etc. Publication is important for research novelty and visibility to other researchers, as well as for world top university ranking. Hence UTHM academicians are urged to publish their works for abovementioned purposes.

Dr Nur Hanis Hayati Hairom is the coordinator of JTKK committee of Publication, Research and Innovation (PRI), where she organise lots of activities related to research and innovation, as well as guiding academicians related to enhancement in publications.

BOOK CHAPTERS ON FOOD PROCESSING BY 4 BNN

- The department would like to congratulate all 4BNN students on their hard work and great effort in successfully publishing two (2) book chapters titled "The application of non-thermal processing in food industries (ISBN: 9789672216629)" and "The aapplication of novel thermal processing in food industries (ISBN: 9789672216612:)". The publication of these book chapters has fulfilled one of the course learning outcomes (CLOs) for Food Technology course (BNN 40304). Publishing book chapter develops a softskill for students in retrieving, collecting and searching in-depth information which is related to the food process technology in current food industries. Moreover, students learnt on publication process, as they involved in editing and preparing the contents of book chapters.

Again, well done for 4BNN students who put great effort on publishing these book chapters 👏👏💐WELL DONE!!

Tremendous efforts have been carried out by JTKK staff members to empower significant research activities which include conferences, grant applications, engagement of JTKK research with local communities e.g. school students. These research activities have been conducted not only for gaining novel knowledge on science related to chemical and biotechnology fields, but also to fullfill  the social responsibilities towards local community, as well as environment.

RESEARCH AND INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGY COMPETITION (RITEC 2019)

- Congratulation to Dr Akhma and team (Assoc Prof Dr. Angzzas Sari, Dr Sity Aishah, Dr Alif and Tan Kian Meng) who have presented Department of Chemical Engineering Technology for winning the Gold Medal Award (Fundamental Research Category) during Research & Innovative Technology Competition (RITEC 2019) held on 10.09.2019 at UTHM Pagoh campus.

A big appreciation goes to PhD student, Tan Kian Meng who showed a superior works to win juries heart in the competition. This award is such a great encouragement and give affirmation to the research work on plastic biodegradation.

MELAKA INTERNATIONAL INNOVATION EXPO 2019 (MIX19)

-Congratulations Dr. Nadirul Hasraf Mat Nayan and project members have been awarded Silver Award at Melaka International Innovation Expo 2019 (MIX19). 5th INTERNATIONAL BIOTECHNOLOGY COMPETITION & EXHIBITION 2019

-On 5th and 6th April 2019, JTKK student, Ho Connie participate in Poster Presentation Competition IBCEx'19 with the theme of Green and Sustainble World. The competition was held in conjunction with the 5th International Biotechnology Competition & Exhibition 2019 placed at Dewan Sultan Iskandar, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM).

Ho Connie was placed 3rd in the competition she participated. Congratulation to Ho Connie for the achievement and the effort she made to through the competition.

The work of novel bacteria enzymes isolated from termite and sago worm guts on the oil palm biomass sample which could remove the lignin structure (biodelignification). This project purposes a new pulping process replacing the conventional method using chemicals and mechanical pulping in the production line of paper and pulp industries. This is to promote economical and greener technology to the world hoping to collaborate with the future industries in Malaysia in the production with new source and method.

 

GOLD AND BRONZE MEDAL RITEC 2018 (DR. NADIRUL) 

- 19th Sept. 2018. Congratulation to Dr Nadirul for winning the following awards in Research and Innovative Technology (RITEC 2018) which is organised by Faculty of Engineering Technology:

  1. Gold medal (Applied Research category) -  'Polylactic Acid 3D Printed Bone Scaffold for Biomedical Engineering Application'.

- Dr Mazatusziha Ahmad joined iCompEx 2018 on 20-22nd March 2018 at Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah Polytechnic, Jitra, Kedah for Construction and Material category. The innovative project is about "active food packaging film" and she received a gold medal. Congratulations!

BRONZE MEDAL - RESEARCH & INNOVATION FESTIVAL UTHM 2017 

- Congratulation to the team represented Department of Chemical Engineering Technology FTK, Tan Kian Meng, Daryl & Sharwin supervised by Dr Akhma & Dr Alif who has been awarded Bronze Medal for the invention “Free From Styrofoam” in Research Innovation Festival UTHM 2017 held on 21-22 November 2017. This award is such great encouragements to the fundamental research work carry out to elucidate polystyrene degrading enzyme isolated from Zophobas morio (Superworm). Plastic eating enzyme (PEE) is believed that could be a useful way to improve biodegradability of polystyrene. PEE is believed to have potential commercial value like other household products that from Malaysia for Malaysian.

COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH IN BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING UTM

- On 26th July 2018, Focus Group B-SMAT organized a seminar on “Collaborative Research in Biomedical Engineering”. The main objective is to build a potential collaboration in Biomedical Engineering between UTHM and UTM. Our distinguished speaker, Prof. Dato' Ir. Dr. Mohammed Rafiq bin Dato’ Abdul Kadir, is the Dean of Faculty of Engineering at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, as well as the expert of Biomedical Engineering. A very inspired speech had been delivered to all UTHM researchers for involving and exploring in research and development. Attendees have background of different fields, where they are UTHM academicians from other faculties e.g. Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering Technology and Faculty of Applied Science and Technology. In conclusion, this seminar open an opportunity to establish a synergized collaboration in research between experts from both UTHM and UTM.

LOI BETWEEN FOCUS GROUP B-SMAT AND MEDITEG

- Research-collaborative visit to Mediteg, Faculty of Engineering (FE), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) was conducted on 27 August 2018. The main objective of this visit is for enhancing research collaboration between focus group B-SMAT and MEDITEG, after previous seminar "Collaborative Research in Biomedical Engineering" which was delivered by Prof. Rafiq on 26 July 2018 at UTHM Pagoh. A warm welcome and an excellent support from Mediteg members create a solid research collaboration between UTHM and UTM.

The visit began with presentations from both parties (B-SMAT and MEDITEG) and then was followed by a visit to their laboratories for the exposure of technology and available facility in FE.

SHARING BREAKFAST TALK BY DR. NADIRUL HASRAF

 - On 11th March 2019, a breakfast talk was given by Dr. Nadirul Hasraf bin Mat Nayan and Encik Azhan organised by Bureau of Academic and Leadership (BNN Student Society). The talk was mainly about expectation of employers towards the fresh graduates.

One of the interesting topic that were discussed was Encik Azhan said that we need to be a student with integrity. He said that integrity in the workplace is so important as these traits foster a positive workplace culture. Whereas, irresponsible behaviour and distrust can make a work environment uncomfortable and tense.

Thanks to Dr. Nadirul and Encik Azhan for spending their time with us for this breakfast talk. Also congratulation to the team members Bureau of Academic and Leadership and thanks to the audiences for attending the talk.
